Make no mistake, the Mentawais are a tough old place to visit. Its no walk in the park. If you’re an international traveller – a one-way jouney takes at least a few days, sometimes longer, if you’re unfortunate enough to get delayed. But in reflection – the rewards are something special. As soon as you’re amongst the islands, everything becomes clear why you made such a big effort. Most folk can get to Padang via a plane from Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Then once in Padang your best bet is to take a ferry. The last we heard, at the time of writing, there were no planes operating to the islands. Ferrys run weekly, but not daily. For most flexibility charter your own boat, but it’ll cost about US$ 700 each way (up to 6 guys). The other options is to take one of the Ferrys that run to either to Maura Siberut on Siberut – or to Tua Pejat in Sipora. Crossings take about 10 hours. See the map below:
